Hydrolyzed Sponge / Sponge Spicules 99% Powder is a natural-source ingredient for delivery and surface-renewal concepts. Physical identity is critical: a hydrolysate may act as a skin-conditioning material, while a spicule grade depends on retained needle-like mineral structures.

Key Benefits

1. Mechanical micro-exfoliation
Siliceous spicules provide controlled mechanical exfoliation for smoother-looking skin and refined surface texture. Documented as a natural dermabrasive for superficial resurfacing. [R3]
2. Temporary microchannels for enhanced delivery
Massage creates transient, self-limiting stratum-corneum microchannels that recover over time. In laboratory skin models, marine Haliclona spicules increased penetration of a 10 kDa fluorescent dextran 33.09 ± 7.16-fold in vitro and 72.14 ± 48.75-fold in vivo. [R1]
3. Supports water-phase actives
Most relevant for hydrophilic macromolecules and water-soluble payloads such as hyaluronic acid. [R4] Compatibility with each active must be validated in the finished formula.

Typical Applications

  • Targeted night serums with a controlled-use protocol
  • Short-contact renewal masks during early tolerability work
  • Gel creams and emulsions designed for suspension

Quick Formulation Guide

Parameter

Practical Development Guidance

Provisional screen

For an intact-spicule leave-on concept, begin around 0.05-0.30% active. This is conservative R&D guidance, not a universal range.

Recommended first screen

Start at 0.10% active in a fragrance-free base. Escalate only after sensory, safety and homogeneity review.

Assay correction

Powder (%) = target active (%) / 0.99. Use 0.101% powder for 0.10% active or 0.303% for 0.30% active.

Dispersion

Pre-wet in a compatible humectant or validated carrier. Disperse evenly.

Shear strategy

Add after the bulk is formed. Use minimum effective shear and compare integrity before and after processing.

Compatibility

First avoid strong acids, retinoids, high alcohol, peroxide, aggressive exfoliants, fragrance and essential oils.

Validation

Assess microscopy, distribution, settling, sensory intensity, erythema, preservation, stability, pumpability and dose uniformity.

First 100 g Prototype Path

For a 100 g prototype targeting 0.10% active/spicule solids, weigh 0.101 g of 99% powder. Prepare a 5.000 g pre-slurry using 0.101 g powder plus 4.899 g of a compatible formula humectant blend, such as reserved glycerin/propanediol. Fold the pre-slurry into 95.000 g of a fragrance-free, fully formed soothing base during cool-down with low shear. The final total is 100.000 g.

This is a dosing path, not a universal formula. Use a base with validated preservation, pH and rheology. Confirm distribution and morphology by microscopy; record sensory response, appearance, pH, viscosity, settling and package delivery. A 0.30% screen requires 0.303 g powder and a separately optimized slurry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hydrolyzed Sponge the same as Sponge Spicules?

Not automatically. A hydrolysate or extract may function as a conditioning material, while a spicule mechanism requires retained needle-like structures. Confirm the exact INCI, source and microscopy for the current grade.

What level should I start with?

For an intact-spicule leave-on R&D concept, begin conservatively around 0.10% active in a fragrance-free base. Compare lower or higher levels only after safety, sensory and homogeneity review.

How much 99% powder gives 0.10% active in 100 g?

Use 0.101 g because 0.100 g active divided by 0.99 equals 0.101 g powder.

Should I dissolve the powder?

No. Treat an intact-spicule grade as a particulate that must be pre-wet and dispersed. Verify the behavior of the current grade.

Can high shear improve uniformity?

It may also fracture or alter spicules. Use the minimum effective shear and compare morphology before and after processing.

What should I avoid in the first prototype?

Avoid strong acids, retinoids, high alcohol, peroxide, fragrance, essential oils and aggressive exfoliants until the base system is understood.

What should procurement confirm?

Confirm INCI, species, process, 99% basis, morphology, size distribution, composition, contaminants, microbiology, storage, shelf life, documents and packs.
